Washington DC Conference And Visits To Baltimore
Posted On Friday, October 5, 1990 at at 8:58 PM by AlvinAttending the IEEE Surface Mount Technology (SMT) conference here in Washington DC. The conference was rather eventful as the quality of the technical papers was very high and we were occupied by many conference activities as we visited a number of the technical centres of excellence in the pleasant city of Baltimore.
I gave a short 20 minutes talk on our work from Cambridge and I did manage to take time off to visit the many museums and landmarks; all in all a very fruitful 10 days here. Shame that Mandy stayed behind in Cambridge, otherwise we could have travelled further afield and visit a few more of the mega-interesting museums here.

Karpathos - A Windy Greek Island
Posted On Sunday, September 9, 1990 at at 12:53 AM by AlvinWe had always loved Greece for the blue blue seas and sky and the wonderful foods and peoples. This was only our second time in this country and the direct flight from Gatwick made this island an ideal quick getaway, without the need to pass through Athens.
We spent our time sitting at timeless cafes by the fishing port of Diafani, walked around the villages of Olympos where we bumped into a traditional festival where the Olympos locals celebrated in their traditional colorful dresses. We also hiked to a little no-man beach off Diafani for a bit of "skinny dipping" to cool off from the September sun. Refreshing !

Phuket And Koh Phi Phi
Posted On Thursday, April 5, 1990 at at 3:51 AM by AlvinWe took a month off and came back to the Far East to relax a little and to celebrate Mandy's father's 60th birthday in Hong Kong. Mandy went to India for 3 weeks beforehand and we met up in Bangkok. We quickly escaped the noise and peoples and left for Phuket. Phuket offered us great Thai seafood as well as a springboard to venture further afield to the tiny Phi Phi Island.
Phi Phi was a little gem of an island surrounded by coral reefs and we could walk across the entire island in an hour; we also took time to visit a few interesting caves along the way. The stay on this tropical island was just pure relaxation as we caught up with some much needed sunning and beach-bumming and cool off with a few icy Chang Beers afterwards - yeh, it's tough !
