Autumn Hiking

Autumn is the ideal season for hiking in Hong Kong as the climate is dry, fresh and not so humid and hot as in Summer. Our house is located about 2km from the MacLehose Trail and we enjoy this proximity by regularly hiking this Trail. The MacLehose Trail is named after a popular Viceroy back in the colonial days and is divided into 10 sections and the Tuen Mun section forms the last section of the Trail. Section 10 offers scenic views of the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir, sightings of Chinese monkeys, a large selection of exotic butterflies and a large piece of quietness away from the madding crowds. Check out the emerald green Tai Lam Chung Reservoir above.Yesterday we hiked along the Trail and made our way to Tsuen Wan, a town on the West of Kowloon which marks the city limit and the start of the New Territories. The weather was ace and we packed a salad for lunch and it took some 5 hours to reach Twisk (a major road cutting through the New Territories from North to South). There were some minor aching limbs afterwards but they did not spoil our appetite. We have located this Food Court in Discovery Park (a modern and quiet mall in Tsuen Wan) and we had a soya sauce chicken and half a roast duck over a bottle of sweet Chinese wine before we dragged ourselves back to the Gold Coast. All in all, a fun day out.
Weekends in Hong Kong
Posted On Friday, August 8, 2003 at at 8:19 PM by AlvinHaving worked hard during the week, we usually spend our weekends relaxing at the GoldCoast Piazza. There are a number of restaurants and cafes at the Piazza but our favourite is an outdoor restaurant called Chilli N' Spice where we can relax with a ice cold beer with a view overlooking the South China Sea. In fact, when one of Mandy's friends from the U.K., Dave, showed up in HK, that was exactly where we took him. Mandy got to know Dave from their London days at the computing firm, CAP. Dave knows computing inside-out so he often gave Mandy a hand when she encountered problems with COBOL, PASCAL and such wonders. Don't ask me man, I have no idea how n can ever equal to n+1. Dave also came to see us in Frascati in 1994.
We visited many of the interesting parks in the New Territories like the Tai Po Waterfront Park (大埔海濱公園) which houses the Lookout Tower (回歸紀念塔) commemorating the 1997 Handover.
We also tried to visit some unusual galleries during the weekends such as this one exhibiting a famous Chinese cartoon character (老夫子).
