Krabi - Life In The Slow Lane

We found Krabi to be a very peaceful and low-key town; it's located close to the Thai boarder with Malaysia and the town had hardly the feel of a backpackers' haven probably because there were few of the ubiquitous massage parlors, girlie bars and hostels one would find in most Thai tourist towns. The only noteworthy attraction in town was the Mudcrab Statues by Krabi River, where one could hire a longboat to explore the mangroves inland. Having said that, only half an hour's bus ride from Krabi would take you to the launch point to one of the world's most recognisable sights - Bond  Island, made famous in the movie "The Man With The Golden Gun". We stayed in a very remote village (no James Bond around here) set amongst rubber and palm plantations and the villagers would start their day by feeding the free-roaming chickens in their front yards and then take their children to school on the back of their motorbikes, often two to three clustered together, holding on tightly. We spent time walking the half hour journey (in the 37C sunshine !) to the main road junction to catch a songthaw (Thai open back van) to BigC and Tesco for a slow lunch and shopping before heading back for an invigorating swim - ah, life in the slow lane, loving it ! We also found this rural restaurant set in an oasis of emerald lake and water fountain with the tables set inside shady bamboo huts where we had an enjoyable Thai curry lunch before slogging the ten minutes' walk back to the slow village life of watching the local lizards race against each other, a couple of backstrokes in the pool, snoozed over a few Thai magazines and then it's almost time for a Black Ice (see photo below) and dinner - hard work, eh ?
